Summary/Abstract: The condemnation and expulsion of Solzhenitsyn by the USSR has put the Western Communist parties in a difficult position. They are pledged to respect for civil rights and liberties during the transition period from capitalism to socialism as well as during socialism. What were they to say in view of Soviet behaviour? Pro-Moscow parties, such as those in Germany, Denmark, the USA, quickly more or less adopted the Soviet arguments. Parties more inclined toward autonomy, such as those of Italy, Japan and Australia, on the other hand, condemned the writer's treatment. More than that, they seriously discussed Solzhenitsyn's work and they used this opportunity in order to point out structural problems and weaknesses of the Soviet system and its disregard for the decisions of the XXth Party congress of 1956.
