Summary/Abstract: The paper considers the problem of the construction of synthetic indicators for multi-criteria rankings (i.e. SAW, TOPSIS, VIKOR) or multivariate comparative analysis methods. Frequent applications are observed in business and socio-economic policy. Most of multi-criteria methods require the considered criteria to be independent. Verification of this assumption is often omitted. The key elements of the multi-criteria methods are normalization and weighting procedures. We propose the procedure for criteria weighting and the method to develop the synthetic indicator which exploits the principal components of the considered criteria covariance matrix. Theoretical propositions are illustrated by the empirical research results for indicators of sustainable growth for voivodships in Poland in the year 2014.
