Summary/Abstract: The cartography of the traditional folk culture and creating national ethnographic atlases is one of the basic tasks of modern ethnography in almost all European countries. The essence and significance of ethnographic cartography are dealt with in the first part of the article and its historical development up to the present is traced. Particular attention is paid to the organizational structure of the institutes set up and founded for the creation of atlases on a national and general European scale. The second part is devoted to the Historical and Ethnographic Atlas of Bulgaria (HEAB). It is pointed out that as early as the 'thirties of this century the Bulgarian ethnographers had brought forward the problem of the necessity of creating a Bulgarian ethnographic atlas, however, the bourgeois-capitalist conditions did not allow the realization of these ideas and the proposals put forward to this end. Only after the socialist revolution in Bulgaria did a qualitative turn-round take place in ethnography, securing the necessary resources of staff and material to implement the HEAB. Regardless of the circumstance that the Bulgarian ethnographers began work on the atlas comparatively late, owing to the rational use made of international experience the HEAB will conform organizationally with the requirements of modern social technology, while it will contain methodologically new contributions in principle. To this end the author gives a summary of the most essential data, and basic-principles to be contained in the programme of aims specially created for the HEAB. The Historical and Ethnographic Atlas of Bulgaria is to be the greatest creative task tackled so far by Bulgarian ethnography. Its fulfillment may be dedicated to the 1300th anniversary of the foundation of the Bulgarian state.
