Text of the City – Perception of the Self. Hermann Grab’s Der Stadtpark

Summary/Abstract: This paper sets out to analyse Hermann Grab’s chief work Der Stadtpark (The City Park, 1935) from the outsider position that the Prague German-speaking author Grab ascribes to the Jewish artist in his lecture on Marcel Proust. The question that arises above all is how to deal with a Prague novel without Prague? By considering Grab’s actual living environment together with his aesthetic reflections in the Proust lecture and their literary embodiment in the novel Der Stadtpark, the paper proposes an interpretation that reveals new perspectives on the relationship between perceptions of the city and discourses of identity.
