Summary/Abstract: The life story of a secondary and university teacher Dr. Franz Hochegger reflects problems of the education and its reforms in the Austrian monarchy in the second half of the 19th century. After the short practice as a private teacher and a study of classical languages at the Philosophical Faculty in Vienna, Franz Hochegger attempted to become a university teacher – this part of his life was interconnected with the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague for a year. However, the majority of his pedagogical and research activities is related to the secondary education. As a director of the Academic Grammar School in Vienna, he contributed to not only a development of this school but also to pressing reforms of teaching at grammar schools through either publication activities in the journal Zeitschrift für die österreichischen Gymnasien or the personal initiative in the establishment of the society of secondary school teachers in Vienna called Mittelschule. The presented study outlines his life story and moreover, his school as well as extracurricular activities.
