Summary/Abstract: The varied predictions and beliefs connected with farming in the course of the year, covering the period from the second half of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century, and based on observations of the moon and stars, and also on certain meteorological factors and phenomena, such as rainfall, thunder, the direction and force of the wind, the colours of the rainbow, etc., are studied in this article. Certain observations on animals and birds in connection with predictions concerning fertility are also indicated. Emphasis is laid on the fact that, having been drawn from long years of observations, these predictions are empirical in character. They accompany the varied activities in the course of the year, indicating to the peasants the favorable and unfavorable conditions and periods for the performance of definite farming operations. Depending on this, in so far as they are a more or less adequate reflection of the environment the predictions studied are classified in three basic groups. The signs by which the predictions are realized are differentiated: predictions known and generally valid all over the country; predictions which are widespread, and those of a markedly regional character, reflecting the special features of the local geographical milieu which lose their sense when detached from it. The extensive spreads of the generally valid predictions reflects the general causative and consequential relations and are rooted in history.
