Summary/Abstract: In the twenty-first century the EU has faced the necessity to keep pace with the US and the BRICS countries. This led to the adoption of the Lisbon Strategy. Today, the EU is still one of the most important economic areas of the world, but it has a lower economic growth comparing with its competitors. This is a result of lower investment in R&D and insufficient usage of information technologies. In 2010, European Commission adopted the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable growth which is propitious to social inclusion. The objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy can only be achieved through the coordinated action of the European Union and the Member States. The main threat to the implementation of the strategy is the decreasing competitiveness of the European Union in the global economy.
