Catastrophic and non-catastrophic risk management tools in agriculture – comparative analysis of traditional and index insurances

Summary/Abstract: The low level of penetration of compulsory subsidized crop insurance, operating in Poland since 2008 justifies the discussion on the amendment of the crop insurance system in Poland, with new tools whichbecause of the lower price would be able to spread more than traditional solutions. Research goal of this study is to compare traditional crop insurance (currently operating in Poland) and crop insurance index, including weather-based and areayield index insurances. The criterion of the comparison is, one of the most important elements influencing the decisions of the buying a mandatory crop insurance, the premium paid. Due to the lack of insurance practice in Poland in the field of index insurance, the analysis is based on theoretical assumptions of net premiums determination and other elements influencing the value of the premium paid by the policyholder. The criterion allowed to isolate significant differences in analyzed insurance products.
