Summary/Abstract: This analysis of selected fragments of classical Greek and Latin literature in the linguistic and historical perspective presents the tradition of comprehending death with the help of conceptual metaphors in opposition to an aware choice for unconventional poetic and philosophic solutions. The subject is the evolution of some real definitions of death and the etymological interpretation of its poetic counterparts, especially those related to oblivion (λὴθη; oblīvĭo, etc.).
