Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the historical and political origins, the thematic characteristics and stylistic specifics, etc., of Udigrudi or the Brazilian film Underground of the late 1960s in its complex relations with Brazil’s Cinema Novo. Analysing several significant films, their structure, and visual messages and providing some of the keynote statements of major representatives of the movement, the study projects the movement on to the panorama of Brazilian film between the 1960s and the arrival of postmodernity.
