Summary/Abstract: When the first Herzegovinian publications appeared, the state was going through a turbulent period marked by changes of political systems and points of view. Cultural circumstances in the period of the Ottoman Empire reign were not good for developing publishing activities. Namely, distrust to the press was reflected in the fact that the first state printing house was opened in 1886 in Sarajevo and it served exclusively for publishing vilayet official newspapers. In 1872 the first public printing house was opened in Mostar and it was lead by Father Franjo Miličević. With the help of Diocese and Franciscan province it succeeded in establishment of publishing in spite of skepticism of Constantinople authorities. That was one of the most significant cultural events for the entire Herzegovina. The printing house with Catholic mission was the first Croatian printing house in B&H; its establishment signified the beginning of newspaper activity which started with the appearance of “Hercegovački bosiljak” in 1883. Newspaper activities, changing the names and locations of printing houses, were continued in the next years. After “Hercegovački bosiljak” was shut down, “Novi hercegovački bosiljak”, “Glas Hercegovca” and Osvit were being published. The mentioned publications were mostly informative, women were present in them through traditional roles which were designated to them by the general social state of that time. The paper shows typology of presenting women in the first publications in Herzegovina, through the content analysis of the mentioned it deals with the way and form of portraying women illustrated by their position in the society. It also defines three basic frameworks (types) through which the presenting is done.
