Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the notion of a commercial letter as a means of specialist communication. The starting point for consideration is a presentation of various texts on a scale beginning from the most common, through the whole spectre of genres of greater and greater degree of professional competence. For instance from a conversation (cf. Boniecka 2009: 151) to a strictly professional discussion of two engineers of the building industry on the subject of steel constructions. The concept of the scale (cf. Kalverkämper 1990) allows to attribute to texts an increasing degree of professional competence, thus it does not force fixed divisions between particular genres because of the level of their expertness. While performing the very characteristics of the commercial letters, a pragmatic dimension comes to the fore, finding more and more supporters in the contemporary linguistics of the text, particularly taking into consideration its situational and functional aspect (cf. Gajda 2009: 139). The article is a short outline of the condition of research on the commercial letters as the specialist texts mainly in German, as well as in Polish text linguistics.
