Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on problems in measuring welfare. It provides a comprehensive presentation of opinions and theories explaining the phenomenon of prosperity in economic theory over the centuries. Some parts of the paper focus on identificatying and critiquing methods of measuring the phenomenon. The paper highlights: – the advantages of GDP and GDP per capita indicators in terms of ease of calculation, comparability, versatility; – their disadvantages, among the most important of which is the failure to include all factors influencing welfare, and those affecting the phenomenon in a negative way (externalities, for example) as well in a positive way (satisfaction from leisure); – that indicators and methods of measurement have evolved. Starting from simple indicators like GDP, GDP per capita and HDI scale and complex rankings, which contain much more information about welfare. The final conclusion from the author’s work would be the necessity of continuous work on inventing the optimal method of measuring welfare.
