Summary/Abstract: Luigi Saporito (Ventimiglia 1914 – Rome 1987) was an experienced journalist, particularly competent on the Countries of central-eastern Europe, above all Yugoslavia and Poland. His first stay in that part of the European continent was in Bulgaria from the end of the thirties to the middle forties. The aim of this essay is to illustrate this unknown page of his life. Such page shows some non secondary aspects of the relationships between Italy and Bulgaria on the eve, during and after the Second World War, regarding principally territorial and economic matters (from the italian-bulgarian cooperation in the agricultural field to the activity of the Italian – Bulgarian Commercial Bank). Many are the interesting episodes, but the most dramatic concerns the internment of the officers of the Italian diplomatic Agency in Sofia after September the 8th in 1943: Saporito was among them. In the historical narration, based on his memoirs and on other documentation, one finds Queen Giovanna of Bulgaria, King Boris III, the plenipotentiary minister Massimo Magistrati, his successor Francesco Giorgio Mameli, Ivan Bagrjanov, Vasil Kolarov, Aldo Moro, Giuseppe Medici, Fausto Gullo and other personalities.
