Summary/Abstract: The six characters in Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves are perpetually speaking: their appearance is externalized through the convention of direct speech. Starting from the fact that Virginia Woolf herself called these speeches “soliloquies”, the purpose of this paper is to try to answer two questions: Do these speeches form a dialogue? Do the characters interact at a communicative level?
