Summary/Abstract: The article defines the role of personal sources for studying history of the teachers' intelligentsia of Russia in the second half of the XIX — the beginning of the XX century. Despite their subjectivity, they help to get into the atmosphere of the époque, to open in sincere and confidential form the inner world of city and rural teachers, their moods, feelings, ex-perience, the attitude to surrounding reality. Owing to this fact, diaries and memoirs are valuable source for studying the history of daily routine of the Russian society
