Summary/Abstract: Issues of ecology in the 21c are widely considered as one of the most important problems of humankind. Since “man is the way for the Church” (RH 14) the ecology must be, in some aspects, a point of interest for the Church. The Magisterium has attended to the problem in question many times before. In 2015 Pope Francis wrote Encyclical Letter Laudato si’. The main aim of the paper is to analyze the document in terms of legal elements included in it. The first two parts of the article are devoted to the sources of legal norms and the functions of law in the context of ecology respectively. The last part of the paper is devoted to the presentation of Francis’ critique of law. Legislation, according to Francis, is a necessary tool, but not fully satisfactory to care for our common home. The main conclusion is that Pope Francis knows the legal issues well, and his outlook on it is very realistic.
