Summary/Abstract: The article presents aspects of the relations between the written culture and the oral tradition in the urban milieu, mainly in Bucharest in the first half of the XlXth century. Besides the written culture in the Romanian towns, the oral culture had an important role. The illiterates had a collective access to the information of the written culture mediated in the forms of urban sociability. One of these forms is represented by the reading aloud in front of a numerous auditorium (for instance the scene described by I. Heliade Rădulescu, when a servant was reading aloud Alexandria, a cheap-book, in the porch of the Kreţulescu church in Bucharest). The printed matter like affiches, advertisments, leaflets, which often contained a rich imagery represented another element of the dialogue between written culture and orality.
