Summary/Abstract: The author analyses four commonplace opinions on maternity: maternity is normal; maternity as reproduction of a matrix; maternity is public; and, asexual mother. The basis for such a division is acknowledgement that any culture has its stereotype of maternity, that is, a set of hackneyed opinions on the role of mother, her rights and obligations. Anna Nasiłowska’s Domino and Księga początku and Manuela Gretkowska’s Polka have in recent years come out as the most interesting books that managed to incite a discussion on the way of literature talks about maternity. The author considers whether the said literary pieces have completely deciphered our thinking about maternity. Apparently, they have not.
