Summary/Abstract: Review of Ewa Makarczyk-Schuster’s book Przestrzeń i znaki przestrzeni w utworach scenicznych Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza lat dwudziestych albo czy na końcu sceny można jeszcze wyciągnąć rękę? [‘The space and signs of space in Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s drama works of 1920s, or: Can you still hold out your hand at the stage’s end?], the Institute for Literary Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN) Publishing House, Warsaw 2005. The reviewer stresses how unusual the work under discussion is, which consists in a revealed (and recorded) enormous visual sensitivity without which attention could not have been paid to nuances of drama/stage space such as light, colour, or props. The book’s author, taking into account certain theses of modern theatrical semiotics, proposes that Witkacy’s (i.e. S.I. Witkiewicz’s) plays be viewed in terms of image(s) rather than word(s), thus joining a position which is gaining popularity amongst Witkacy scholars.
