Summary/Abstract: The review examines the extensive monograph "Johans Valters" by art historian Kristiāna Ābele (Riga, 2009) dealing with the painter Johann Walter (1969-1932) of mixed German-Latvian background whose early neo-romanticist works have entered the canon of Latvian art but the his later Expressionist career in Dresden and Berlin had remained largely unknown until now.
