Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with particle verbs in Upper Sorbian. The formation of verb particles that stem from prepositions is analysed. The questions whether prepositional phrases with nimo (past), napřećo (opposite), wokoło (around) and prjodk (in front of) are integrated into verb forms and whether particle verbs with these elements are a productive model in Sorbian word formation are discussed. Examples from two translations of the Bible into Upper Sorbian (1728 and 1960-1976) are compared. There are some particle verbs that have the status of a coined lexeme, some verb particles (wokoło, prjodk) also allow the formation of new verbs according to the pattern of such coined lexemes (model coinage). These lexemes can be viewed as independent of their equivalent particle verbs in German. However, in many cases a closer tie to the German equivalent can be observed. The question of the integration of the whole prepositional phrase depends on the valency of the verb and the preposition in the two contact languages. Furthermore, the productivity of the equivalent German verb particle is crucial for the usage of Sorbian verb particles and their integration into the Sorbian word formation system.
