Summary/Abstract: The study analyses the role of an author‘s subject in a text and the communication between an author and a reader in Russian hagiography of the 11th-14th centuries. These questions are not studied because of the way the specific author perceived them, but important is what collective ideas of this problem there were. From this point of view the topos is relevant because it is the repeating topos that reflects and at the same time creates the collective conscience by far more significantly than a singular statement. Within the author‘s metatext several topical areas exist, these are the metatext of the author‘s self-presentation (how authors characterize themselves in a text), the metatext of the work reception (statements on who the text is targeted at, why legends should be read), the metatext of the information sources and the metatext that creates the structure of the text. Although hagiography is often opposed to historiography, the analysis of medieval legends shows that the self-reflection of creators of the 11th- 14th centuries Russian legends is in many respects close to the self-awareness of historians.
