Having a news network with international ambitions is becoming a sign of prestige for more and more countries trying to influence the media landscape and gain attention to their political perspectives. Al Jazeera is a unique example of the role such networks play in the Middle East and beyond. Founded in 1996, in Doha – capital of Qatar – it changed the social landscape of the Arab world, forging its own, unique brand, known for being a place of open debate on issues often regarded as taboos. It has been an object of attacks from many different angles – the most well known was the one by the Bush administration after 9/11. However, the biggest wave of prejudices, which was most intense in the United States, could be seen after the launch of Al Jazeera English. The article focuses on media coverage related to the Arab news network and its meaning for the world in terms of forging a place for public debate, trying to balance the north-south inequality in terms of news coverage and using modern technology to gain ground on the North American media landscape.
