Summary/Abstract: The author presents a criticism of the modern concept of power and, specifically, of the concept of ’sovereignty’ as articulated by Michael Foucault. What does it consist in, and what meaning does the undermining, by a French philosopher, of the idea of the legitimisation of power have for a modern state? A polemic with Foucault’s views, by Charles Taylor, serves as a departure point for the aforesaid considerations.
