Summary/Abstract: American firewalking movement and Bulgarian Nestinarstvo are two phenomena extremely distant from one another in terms of time and space; each of them has its own history of genesis and development, its own forms of existence and stable internal meaning. This paper presents a comparison of the two phenomena and discusses the main similarities and differences between them, describes the unique characteristics of each practice, the desired effects and achieved goals, as well as the specific explanations of the fire immunity which the participants in both practices demonstrate. The analysis offers understanding of the psychological aspects of the subjective experience during both practices and focuses on the therapeutic importance attributed to the firewalking element.
