Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the developments of Private International Law in the European Community: from the "first generation of conflict of law rules" included in the Rome Convention from 1980 (Kohler) to the "Communitarization of the Conflict of Laws under the Treaty of Amsterdam" (Basedow). Having in mind the developments in the EU, the author discusses the necessity of the elaboration of an Acton Private International Law in Bulgaria. Special emphasis is put on the new approach to conflict of law rules in EC, namely art. 65 EC Treaty, relating to measures which are necessary for the proper functioning of the internal market. Bulgaria has the status of an associated country and has assumed the obligation to approximate its legislation to EC law, including its PIE. This makes even more urgent the adoption of a special Act on Private International Law in Bulgaria, argues the author.
