Summary/Abstract: The recent statements on the failure of the multicultural project or a crisis of multiculturalism have given rise to numerous questions which call for critical scientific consideration. First of all, there is a question on its applicability and the effects of applying this approach to cultural diversityin contemporary multicultural societies. Is multiculturalism an adequate answer to the challenges encountered by these societies? Bearing in mind that there are two model of multiculturalism: the static (posi- tivistic) model and the dynamic (systemic, holistic) model, there is a need to accu- rately define these models. Concurrently, making a clear distinction between the two models is highly relevant and justifiable as they embody quite different approaches in perceiving and treating cultural diversity, aswell as a different understanding of mul- ticulturalism as opposed to interculturalism. Given the fact that promoting and practicing cultural diversity is necessarily reflected in the treatment of national and ethnic minority cultures in the given society (and that there are many factors in favour of emphasizing their cultural differences), the focus on the aforementioned cultures in this study of multiculturalism is plausible and well-grounded. This article primarily explores the current circumstances in the developed Western countries but the presented comments and observations may also give rise to further scientific considerations on other countries, including Serbia.
