Summary/Abstract: Using an edited letter of January 13, 1851, that is, a letter written during a key period of change, this contribution analyses a disagreement between the historian Václav Vladivoj Tomek and the journalist Vilém Gabler, future director of the Higher School for Girls in Prague. The two men were friends and at some point close collaborators of the journalist Karel Havlíček. The experience of 1848 forced them to make certain life-changing decisions which influenced their personal relationship for years to come. Based on Tomek’s Paměti (Memoirs), the author also briefly describes the development of personal relations between V.V. Tomek and Vilém Gabler after the post-1861 change of political circumstances.
