Summary/Abstract: The article devoted to the 190th anniversary of the first Buryat scholar Dorzhi Banzarov describes his life and his academicactivity. The article includes various examples and facts which underline the significance of the famous scholar andhis work in the Russian oriental studies of the early 19th century and in the cultural and academic life of modern Buryatia.
