Summary/Abstract: In India of the classical period, love – as a basic phenomenon of human existence – was obviously present. Numerous erotic sculptures of Indian temples and impressive love lyrics of the Sanskrit literature, to mention only these, show no need for any further explanation regarding the matter. This profusion of erotic representations, however, makes a modern observer hesitate – it is not only the question of the abundance, but above all it is the stereotypic manner of these representations. One is confronted here with beautiful bodies, mainly female, represented in various situations of sexual-erotic behavior which – being ‘canonized’ as it were, in their constantly repeated form – remind one about artistic mannerism and ultimately hardly bring about thoughts about love. Lyrics offer quite similar canonization of pictures and aesthetic forms, which actually do not give utterance to love, but in reality evoke erotic mood.
