Summary/Abstract: This paper draws upon findings from studies of young people in the labour markets, conducted during the 1990s in seven Central and East European, and former Soviet, countries. It discusses the creation of new divisions and career groups: the self-employed and the unemployed, public and private sector workers, each sub-divided into those in marginal and those in regular jobs. Finally, the paper discusses the likelihood of class formation on the basis of the emergent patterns of occupational stratification in the New East.
