Summary/Abstract: Planning is considered as one of the most important management functions. In the case of complex and unique projects planners’ tasks become even more difficult than in the case of planning of repetitive actions of an organization. Discussions on planning caused by the popularization of the so-called agile project management methods raise the topic of volatility and low sustainability of project plans. The purpose of this article is to present the results of the empirical research conducted in terms of volatility and sustainability of project plans. The research strategy included questionnaires addressed to a group of 185 specialists in project management asked to assess last completed project. The analysis showed that the projects amendments mostly concerned the duration of the tasks involved, project schedule and required resources. “Soft projects” were characterized by longer life project plans than the so-called “hard projects”. Along with the expansion of the range of a project the level of volatility of the planned structure of the project team, the plan of the planning phase of the project and the planned project resources increase. In addition, it has been shown that the project complexity impact the variability of project plans.
