Theatrical Profession and Prestige in the Last Decades of the 19th Century in Cluj

Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the professionalization of acting at the Hungarian National Theatre from Cluj in the last four decades of the 19th century. The fi rst part deals with the evolution of both institutional management and of theatrical profession in cultural, legal and economic aspects. In order to review the period encompassing almost four decades, the study conceives three sections of institutional history which can be linked to the activity of three outstanding personalities. These were the following theatre managers: Antal Fehérváry (between 1866–1872), Bogdán Korbuly (1874–1878) and Mór Ditrói (1887–1897). By making use of several insights related to the study of the era the second part concentrates on the professional group of actors through a few case studies. The analysis is based, on the one hand, on actors’ social demography and the organization/functioning of actors’ labor market, while on the other hand, on their socioeconomic roles as determined by their income. However, as opposed to theatre history research which has been generally focusing on celebrity/star actors/actresses, the present study attempts to increase knowledge about the unknown majority (choir singers, dancers) by looking at the group’s main dynamics, and also at group composition on the basis of gender and theatre roles.
