Summary/Abstract: In the article selected films by Michał Waszyński, made in the interwar period, are considered in the post-colonial and post-dependence perspective. These films – according to the author – are part of the colonial discourse of the popular variant, i.e. they refer to emotional arguments in order to raise support among the masses for Polish colonial policy. The analysed “exotic” films refer to petrified iconic patterns, thus becoming representative examples of kitsch defined as “the art of great longing”. Within the cultural policy of the government of the Second Republic heroic colonial narratives perform essential therapeutic and compensatory functions.
