Summary/Abstract: The article considers the "sociology of exceptionality" of the contemporary French art sociologist Natalie Heinich, who corrected, developed and widely applied the sociology of the artistic field elaborated by P. Bourdieu during the 19th century. She pays much attention to the formation of an autonomous artistic field and the social institutes connected with the artist's identity and status. She explores exhaustively these aspects against a wide historical background.
