Summary/Abstract: The article places the cultural phenomenon of piracy within two related trends: the illegal or semi-illegally archiving of content from the Internet and the problematic question of property rights for intellectual innovations. Digital archiving, associated with Do It Yourself culture, goes beyond the traditional task of archiving cultural goods, and by dispersing the functions of the archivist, it suspends the traditional distinction between documenter/curator and viewer/user. This casts doubt on the issue of copyright, like the work of postmodernists, if we tried to examine it from this angle. The article shows different ways that hacking culture influenced the authorial strategies of Dorota Masłowska and compares the cultural activities of pirates with the strategies found in Michel de Montaigne’s "Essays".
