Summary/Abstract: ‘What is sociology?’ is a century old question finding no final answer. The present paper provides an interpretation of sociology that incorporates such notorious characteristics as mutual disavowals among the founders of the European sociological tradition; formidable lack of ‘core’, of ‘accumulation of knowledge’, and of ‘discipline’; politization of the sociological community; vaining of disciplinary distinctiveness, etc. The paper offers an argument why we should make sociology nevertheless.
