Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the return of Czechoslovak Jewish women back to Czechoslovakia from the Ravensbrück concentration camp after their liberation and its conditions, 1945-1948. While they began their lives anew, the women had to decide whether to stay here or to emigrate. Schikorra discusses the social conditions, individual strategies and room for manoeuvre which the survivors developed in this specific historical situation. Many of the Slovak women in question left the country or moved to Prague, while a number of the Czech survivors left for the US, UK or Israel. Schikorra demonstrates the complex background of these decisions, that should not be summarised by ideological reasons only.
