On the problem of the formation of the adessive

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the formation of the Lithuanian adessive. The grammaticalisation of the adessive construction (with the Proto-Baltic postposition Baltic *pie) is shown to have occurred after the operation of Leskien’s law. Rosinas’ (1999) claim according to which the adessive singular forms are built on the base of old datives is critically examined and rejected for both morphological and syntactic reasons. An attempt is made to provide an explanation for the dialectal and Old Lithuanian dative sg. forms in -i, -u and -ie of i-, u- and o-stems respectively.
