Summary/Abstract: The essay deals with the question concerning the reasons for the existence of such cultural phenomena in the context of trans-border Hungarian literature as magical realism in post-colonial cultures. Why is it that such cultural phenomena primarily manifest themselves in the literature of ethnic minorities? How and wherein do these works differ from the classics of magical realism? While seeking the answer to such questions, the author confronts the debate surrounding the selfdefinition of minority literatures with similar attempts of colonial cultures, and surveys the conclusions established by postcolonial literary theory on the basis of such debates.
