Summary/Abstract: It is common, in many languages, to characterise a road, a path or an oblong object by means of a directional verb of motion. This article offers a fairly detailed analysis of such instances of the prolongated object mode of predication, based on Lithuanian language material. The regularity of the phaenomenon under discussion sheds doubt on attempts at explaining the use of such verbs of motion as serving the purposes of figurative speech and expressive imagery: it must spring from deeper cognitive sources. The cognitive nature of the prolongated object mode of predication is here examined with the aid of Langacker’s notion of subjective movement. Attention is also drawn to the semantic and grammatical pecularities of verbs representing this type of predication.
