Summary/Abstract: The article presents the theory of the linguistic picture of the world and the theory of image schemas and discusses their role in the interpretation of “older” literature. The problem is illustrated using letters written by and to B. Němcová, a nineteenth-century Czech female writer. The text attempts to demonstrate that the two aspects play different roles in different writer-reader configurations – in the context of the original epistolary communication, when the texts are read by nineteenth-century readers who were not the intended addresses, and when they are interpreted by a contemporary reader.
