Summary/Abstract: In addition to the economic transition, Romania still faces another transition, the demographic shift from state driven fertility model to the modern patterns of reproductive and family behavior, based on individualistic values.Although a connection between demographic and economic decline has not yet been clearly established, the latter is considered both cause and effect for the former. The demographic downturn usually has negative consequences on the economic and social development of a country. All this puts pressure on social security and pension systems leading to an enormous imbalance both at macro and micro level. The propose of this paper is to review the impact that low fertility has on the general economic and social outcome of a country with reference to the current situation of Romania aiming to rise attention to the necessity of adopting a coherent demographic policy that will ensure a long term stability in the trend of fertility.
