Summary/Abstract: The origins of jazz in Poland date back to the years prior to World War II. However, the peak of its popularity this genre enjoyed at the turn of the 50s and 60s of the 20th century. Different styles developed simultaneously: both traditional – dixieland, as well as all varieties of modern jazz. Apart from performing American jazz standards, Polish jazz musicians looked for new inspiration and stimuli for their work. The source of inspiration was found in Polish folklore. It was referred to by such composers as Zygmunt Wichary, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Andrzej Trzaskowski, Michał Kulenty, and many others. These folk influences can be divided into two trends. The first trend consists in the exploitation of original tunes and folk songs for their creative development and arrangement. The second one is made up by compositions stylistically referring to Polish folklore – through employing the rhythm and melica of Polish dances, or creating original compositions having the character of dances or folk melodies.
