The Tavern Phenomenon And Modernization

Summary/Abstract: Starting from the triad: tavern – city – society/modernization, and first dia- chronically (from the 16th to 21st century) in this paper, the author generally and fragmentarily indicates the influence of the tavern as the public sphere of the individ- ual, city and society as a whole in the European, Balkan and Belgrade sociocultural context. On the other hand, synchronically, on the basis of sociological intermingling of the micro level (tavern), meso level (city) and macro level (society), the light is shed on the role of the tavern as the first institution of the growing modern society in the formation and strengthening of modernization, which in some places occurs as an accelerated and more integral – Western Europe, and somewhere else as a belated, de- celerated, unfinished, incomplete process – the Balkans and Serbia.
