Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is, by highlighting its main functions, to clarify the role of kafana in the development of the modern society. The kafana has functioned in emancipating, cultural, social, economic, informative and political roles; it has also served as the place of vice and idling away the time. In order to present relevant social aspects of the kafana, these functions are analyzed through theoretical conceptions of modern and postmodern society. The article deals with the kafana as an institution in Belgrade, in particular, although East and West tradition are mentioned as well in order to emphasize its gen- eral characteristics.
