Legend about the Tsar-redeemer in the Contemporary

Summary/Abstract: The report deals with the expectation of forthcoming of righteous tsar, which is widespread among some groups of contemporary Russian Orthodox Christians. These beliefs can be compared with the messianic expectations, which are known all over the world; the nearest parallel in Russian tradition is the legend about „returning tsar-redeemer” (XVIIXIX cent.), which was explored by Russian folklorist K. V. Chistov. Comparison of the main motifs of the old legend and contemporary beliefs, we can draw some conclusions about the modification of the folklore motif under the influence of the historical situation.
