Summary/Abstract: Following the previous two chapters in which the author tells how he had managed to avoid the recommendation to join the Communist party and then the attempt made by the Securitate to recruit him in its ranks, as well as his manifest opposition to using psychiatry for political purposes, this new chapter tell us about his efforts to get a passport for the “Free World” from which he would no longer return. The “action” takes place in the spring of 1977, when the devastating earthquake rocked Romania and mainly Bucharest. The author describes the various political pressures to which he was put after he had signed the protest initiated by the dissident Paul Goma. The complex state of mind of the Romanian intellectuals, the permanent suspicion, alertness, fear and more or less muted revolt add to the picture of Communist dictatorship epoch.
