Summary/Abstract: Among the many roots of the animosities between the Philistines and the Israelites a major one was undoubtedly the tension of concurring economic interests. During the reign of Saul and up to the appeasement achieved by David, the war was actually fought for the same agricultural territory. From the beginning of the Neo-Assyrian era, the territory of both peoples became part of the zone of influence of the rising empire, which rendered their controversy more and more intellectual. Finally, the enmity was integrated into the national tradition.
